Cognitive Remediation

Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT), a computer-based cognitive rehabilitation training program for patients with memory, processing speed, or executive planning deficits, is a series of game-like “brain training” exercises based on science that helps people think more clearly and quickly. It is especially helpful with untreated mental illnesses and has been shown to protect and improve cognitive functioning.

Research has publicized that over time untreated mental illnesses can lead to long-term cognitive impairment such as a loss of processing skills, memory reduction, attention, problem-solving ability, and intelligence. Additionally, Thought Disorders can impact a person’s social cognition (people skills) to the point of the inability to read nonverbal social cues (facial expressions, body language, etc.).

Combined with therapy, psychoeducation, and medications, CRT has shown to be effective in stopping the cognitive decline and in some instances reversing it. CRT has proven to be even more effective when started earlier with newly diagnosed young adults. The design of CRT leads to gradual but sustained progress.
