Thoughts Disorders

What Are Thought Disorders?

A thought disorder is when someone has trouble with cognition, which can include difficulty speaking, difficulty fully expressing thoughts, inability to maintain one thought, difficulty focusing, and more. Known to disrupt an individual’s thought process, some common thought disorders include schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
Because people with thought disorders can be initially misdiagnosed due to the complexity of their symptoms, it’s important to seek help from a trained professional who can accurately diagnose the problems and prescribe the right course of treatment. Thought disorders can be successfully managed, however, the treatment must be individualized considering the person’s history, motivation, and response to suggestions.

Treatment for Thought Disorders

An individual can learn to manage the symptoms of schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, and psychosis successfully. The treatment must be individualized considering the person’s history, motivation, and response to suggestions. At Lifeskills, we treat thought disorders using our Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) Pathway.
The CRT Pathway is used to treat clients with thought disorders that are experiencing cognitive deficits including problems with attention, memory, processing speed, facial recognition, and other social deficits. The pathway uses Brain HQ which is a computer-based cognitive rehabilitation training program that helps people think more clearly and quickly. Using brain games and interpersonal skills groups, the pathway helps clients improve their attention, memory, problem-solving, organizational, and planning skills. Our CRT Pathway also uses other types of therapy, psychoeducation, and medications to help stop the cognitive decline and in some instances reverse it.
