Suffering from a psychiatric or substance use disorder is difficult for everyone; however, when a loved one is suffering and does not want help, it can leave the family confused and helpless. Shame, denial, and disapproval can worsen the situation and make it difficult for a person to reach out for treatment. Regardless of the reason, the family will often feel overwhelmed and at times powerless to help. Marchman Alcohol and other Drug Service Act of 1993, often simply called the “Marchman Act,” is a legislative act that provides intervention, detention, and assistance for individuals struggling with drug and alcohol abuse. When the word ‘Intervention’ gets mentioned, most people will ultimately envision the popular television show on A&E. The show originally debuted in 2005 and documents families that give their addicted friends and family members an ultimatum; to seek treatment and rehabilitation or else! However, most viewers aren’t exposed to the actual selection process of the interventionist.
