Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT), also called cognitive enhancement therapy, helps a person learn skills to manage their everyday life. CRT aims to reduce problems with cognition, such as attention, memory, and executive functioning. As a mental illness progresses, cognitive skills suffer and become more impaired. This decline will begin to interfere with a person’s normal functioning in relationships, at work and in school. The Key Substance Use and Mental Health Indicators in the United States noted that of the 10.4 million Americans suffering from a severe mental illness and the 19 million suffering from a substance use disorder in the past year, 8.2 million had a co-occurring disorder. At some point in our life, we will experience a form of trauma.  Often unforeseen, these events can begin and end in an instant or emerge over time.  Traumatic events can affect us for the rest of our lives.  Many people who experience a traumatic event will recover from the symptoms naturally, however; those who continue to experience symptoms are diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Affecting over 7.7 million adults, PTSD is often seen in victims of sexual assault and military veterans. Children can also have PTSD after a traumatic event and may withdraw from friends, refuse to talk or experience frequent stomach aches. (more…)

Although some operators and associates are now in jail or under investigation, there is still work to do.  This is a welcomed move in the right direction. Alice Saltzman, Certified Yoga Instructor at Lifeskills South Florida, knows firsthand what it means to take health and fitness seriously and make it a priority in one’s life.  “I was a heavy teenager; I was bullied and teased in high school, and as an adult, I made a conscious decision to live a healthier lifestyle through yoga and nutrition.  When I discovered yoga it was the first place I discovered within me that I felt completely safe relaxed and calm.”  Her goal at Lifeskills South Florida is to take her passion for a healthy lifestyle and help clients learn to implement changes in their lives while in treatment so they can be successful in their overall recovery from mental health and addiction.
